A 20-year-old Waimea man died following a two-vehicle collision 1/2 mile south of the 3-mile marker on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190) Saturday night just outside Waimea.

He has been identified as Jourdan Evangelista.

Officers responding to a 7:43 p.m. call determined Evangelista was a front seat passenger in a northbound green 1999 Volkswagen Jetta that lost control on a curve due to wet roadway conditions. The Jetta then veered into the oncoming southbound lane of travel, where it was involved in a broadside collision with a gold 2014 Dodge Caravan driven by a 55-year-old Waikoloa woman.

All occupants of both vehicles were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital for treatment, and Evangelista was officially pronounced dead at 9:06 p.m.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

A negligent homicide investigation has been opened and anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at 326-4646, ext. 229. Those who prefer anonymity may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.

Evangelista’s death is the 16th official traffic fatality this year compared to nine at this time last year.
